It’s a great treat to pick tea in the cloud-shrouded “Golden Tea Valley” at the foot of Lyudong Mountain in Baojing County. Putting a headscarf and a bamboo basket, one can learn how to pick tea from local farmers and sample the traditional handmade tea in tea gardens. With tea aroma lingering on fingertips, one can truly derive great pleasure from tea-picking.

Promoting tea production and sale

Located in the southeast of Baojing County and 90 kilometers away from the county, Huangjin Village serves as the core production area of Baojing Golden Tea. In 2021, there were 159 large-scale tea producers (with an annual output of 2,500 kilograms of dried tea) in the village, yielding a total output value of 180 million yuan. As the pillar industry of Baojing County, Baojing Golden Tea has been enjoying the reputation that “one kilogram of tea is worth one kilogram of gold”. Huangjin Village has blazed an “organic, characteristic, quality and efficient” trail for the development of tea industry, providing new channels to increase the income of local residents.

In terms of the germplasm resource conservation, the ancient tea bushes of Baojing Golden Tea have been under legislative protection, and seed production and germplasm bank of Baojing Golden Tea have been put in place, in an effort to build standardized tea gardens based on technology and modernize facilities. In addition, the emphasis of Huangjin Village has been transferred from tea planting to tea processing and sale. Baojing County has integrated the agriculture-related funds and cultivated leading tea enterprises, which are expected to drive standardized tea production and ensure the high quality, affordable price and good sales of Baojing Golden Tea as well as the steady increase of tea growers’ income.

Integration of tea and tourism

As the holy mountain of the Miao people, Lyudong Mountain enjoys higher popularity than the other peaks of Wuling Mountain. In recent years, with the booming development of Baojing Golden Tea, merchants and tourists across China have poured into Baojing County. In July of 2021, Baojing Golden Tea Town was included on the list of 10 new characteristic industrial towns in Hunan Province and the list of characteristic towns managed by the Development and Reform Commission of Hunan Province. Baojing County has been committed to building “Baojing Golden Tea Characteristic Town” featuring the in-depth integration of tea industry and tourism.

Focusing on the layout of natural landscape, Baojing Golden Tea Town will not only explore the original ecological culture of places like Lyudong Mountain, Shiziping Miao Village and Wangtian Slope, but also carry forward the custom of worshipping ancestors in Lyudong Mountain, so as to develop the mountain into a spiritual home of the Miao people at home and abroad. A national holiday resort featuring Shiwan Tea Valley, the Miao villages, agritourism and local folkways will be built. In Baojing Golden Tea Town, one can savor Baojing Golden Tea while soaking up the Miao culture amid places including China’s most captivating tea valley, holy Lyudong Mountain and the Miao villages.

Strengthening industrial chain

In recent years, great efforts have been made in Baojing County for the high-quality development of golden tea industry, with the combination of tea culture, tea industry and tea technology. By promoting tea production and sales as well as agritourism, Baojing County has formed a development pattern with culture and technology empowering industry integration, and established the industrial chain of Baojing Golden Tea. In accordance with the idea of “supplementing, strengthening and extending industrial chain”, it has pursued the integration of the primary, secondary and tertiary industries in rural areas to develop the whole industrial chain of Baojing Golden Tea.

Based on the efforts made to build Baojing Golden Tea Characteristic Town, Baojing County has developed an industrial model of “leading enterprises + village cooperatives + farmers”. It has not only built 9 high-standard tea processing plants and 11 full-automatic tea processing lines, but also opened a high-speed train for Baojing Golden Tea to “go out”.
